The 30th International Display Workshops (IDW ’23) will be held in-person from December 6 to 8, 2023 at the TOKI MESSE Niigata Convention Center. The conference will feature 465 papers, including 4 keynote addresses, 163 invited presentations, 141 oral presentations, and 157 poster presentations. Following the plenary session of keynote addresses on Wednesday morning, presentations will begin and continue in 8 parallel oral sessions through Friday. Immediately after the allotted session, an “Extended Q&A” where the presenter and attendees participating in-person can communicate with each other to discuss topics in details. Poster sessions will be held every day during the conference. In addition to these presentations, the I-DEMO will feature 31 demonstrations. Furthermore, the conference will host three special events: the “Pre-IDW ’23 Event: Metaverse Learning and Networking,” “Display Night,” and “Capturing and Displaying Image Technologies in the Medical Field.” Exhibits by display industry-related businesses and universities will also be featured from Wednesday to Friday at onsite venues and as well in the metaverse venue in parallel with workshops. IDW ’23 should be of interest to not only researchers and engineers, but also managers of companies and institutions in the display community.

Special Topics of Interest on Artificial Intelligence and Smart Society (AIS)Recently, artificial intelligence has become a common technology, and it will be a key concept of the smart society in the future, the stages known as Industry 4.0 and Society 5.0, where the cloud and edge are excellently connected. The relationship between information displays, artificial intelligence, and smart society will be discussed in the AIS. This year, six sessions will be held, and many invited and regular talks will be presented, which will propose how to interact with information displays, the smart society, and artificial intelligence. These include AI-assisted development of transistor materials, oxide-based phototransistor for neuromorphic applications, a-IGZO TFT based neuron circuit for artificial neural networks, a lensless driver monitor system with deep learning, and optimizing image quality for CNN-based image style transfer, etc. In addition, poster sessions are also planned. These will all show that the AIS has a wide relationship with various technologies
Special Topics of Interest on AR/VR and Hyper Reality (AR&VR)Augmented reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) applications and UI/UX employing high performance display devices such as sensors, cameras, and software technologies have shown significant progress in the recent years. This year, we have organized Special Topics composed of related papers from multiple sessions ranging from display devices to optics for HMD, algorithm, ergonomics and materials for AR/VR applications in conjunction with the 3DSA international conference. The IDW ’23 is a venue to access versatile state-of-the-art research in AR and VR.
Special Topics of Interest on Automotive Displays (AUTO)AUTO will be held on Thursday, December 6th and Friday 7th in four sessions with PRJ/FMC, INP, FMC and MVS/PRJ. In the PRJ/FMC session, image steering by MEMS SLM for near-to-eye AR display, laser signal projection for effective lane changes on expressways, a deblur image processing system for full color aerial imaging optics, and an aerial guide that improves the floating sense of aerial images formed with AIRR and fresnel lens will be presented. In the INP session, versatile applications of silver nanowire, sharp force touch for on-screen user interfaces in LCD and foldable OLED display applications and new design direction of automotive displays will be presented. In the FMC session, thin and low power 2D-backlight module development with white mini-LEDs, improvements for automotive LCDs, image enhancement and local dimming, and glass QD plate development for automotive mini-LED BLU will be presented. In the MVS/PRJ session, interesting reports will be made on technological challenges for the next generation of advanced automotive displays, a novel fully transparent photoluminescent display and its vehicle applications, measuring optical performance of near-eye displays, and HUD image correction using holography technology. AUTO covers a wide range of technologies related to automobile displays, and we can expect presentations for future automotive technologies. This research will surely attract the attention of those interested in the automotive field
Special Topics of Interest on Micro/Mini LEDs (mLED)Nearly 30 presentations will be made on recent progress and future technical issues in materials, processes, driving circuits, etc., for large, small, and ultrasmall micro/mini-LED panels which are attracting worldwide attention. In FMC, novel micro-LED technologies for high-performance micro-LED display will be reported on, including nanowire LED with quantum dot inks, InGaN-based red micro-LED technology for RGB monolithic integration, mass transfer technology such as the tape-assisted laser transfer method, and red LED utilizing a novel red-emitting phosphor. In MEET, highly efficient, cost-competitive micro/mini-LEDs fabrication technologies such as GaN-on-Si LED technology and mass transfer technology, will be presented. In addition, novel materials, which can achieve high internal quantum efficiency, wide color gamut, and high brightness, such as heavy-metal free QDs, will be presented. New applications for micro/mini-LEDs for AR/VR displays and optical communication devices will be discussed. In AMD, manufacturability of micro-LED on CMOS for AR glasses, transparent micro-LED displays for XR eyewear, quantum dot color conversion for micro-LED applications, and oxide TFT-based micro-LED pixel circuits with external sensing system will be presented. In LCT, novel LCD-related technologies such as the characterization of mini-LED halos and the optimization of metal layer design enabling promising picture quality with 3600 dimming zones will be reported on. In DES and FLX, presentations on driving circuits and flexible/stretchable display will be made.
Special Topics of Interest on Quantum Dot Technologies (QDT)This topic will specialize in QD technologies (QDT) in order to provide a venue to spark discussions in each field. At IDW ’23, sessions will be established as STI at each Work Shop of PH, MEET, OLED and FMC. The Topics of each WS will be as below.
PH-WS: Pb-related issue in QDs will be discussed, and key materials of QLEDs will be presented. Fabrication of Cd-Free QLED based on an ionic layer adsorption and reaction method will also be presented.
MEET-WS: Emissive displays, light sources and image sensors by using highly efficient and thermally stable heavy metal-free quantum dot materials such as colloidal Perovskites, ZnSe nanocrystals, inorganic semiconductor nanodots or organic nanodots, and so on.
OLED-WS: Efficient emissive Cd-free QDs, especially InP QDs, and their application to light-emitting diodes will be discussed.
FMC-WS: Presentations will be made on basic material evaluations of QD sheets for mLED backlighting using Perovskite QDs, QD diffusion sheets and QDs produced by inkjet.

14th International Conference on Three Dimensional Systems and Applications (3DSA)3DSA is an international conference on audio-visual technologies, systems and applications for hyper reality, such as Holographic Technology, AI Technology for 3D, Light Field Display, 3D Capture & Processing, 3D Coding & Transmission, 3D Displays & Systems, 3D Contents and Applications, Augmented Reality & Virtual Reality, Metaverse, Immersive Video Processing & Coding, Free Viewpoint Image Systems, Interactive Systems, Illusion, Human Brain Sensing, and Multi-modal/Cross-modal Systems. As is the case each year, it provides a very good opportunity to follow the recent trend on the technical fields.
Topical Session on DX Sensing and Radiation Imaging (DXR)DXR provides the platform for presentations on DX technology in sensing and imaging in addition to radiation imaging systems and detection materials as a novel display technology. A wide technical range from materials development to system construction will be covered. The session includes five invited talks on materials development and construction of imaging systems. In addition, a variety of talks on the development of flat panel detectors for radiation detection, dosimetry materials, and materials for visualization of ionizing radiation will be given.
Topical Session on Image Sensing Technologies (IST)At this year's IST will include presentations on HDR sensors and their expression methods, quantum imaging, infrared sensors and their applications, biomedical imaging, and AI processing of sensing information. There will be engaging presentations on the most recent trends in a broad spectrum of sensing and application technologies.
Topical Session on Metaverse System (MVS)MVS-TS is a session on metaverse systems that allows users to experience beyond the real world by, for example, freely interacting with people around the world through their avatars in VR and AR spaces and trying out difficult experiments and verifications in the real world. This year, MVS-TS has prepared four sessions including six invited lectures, focusing on the role of information interfaces such as displays, the latest experiential technologies such as 3D display technology, user input/output technologies, the latest industries, and applications for automobiles and office applications. Session MVS1 will have a variety of talks on the application of MVS space to new work styles, MVS space using omnidirectional images, and 3D imaging for MVS. The session is expected to lead to meaningful discussions. Session MVS2/PRJ6, is a related presentation to the keynote speech "BMW i Vision DEE," and a wide range of talk are planned, including a detailed technical explanation of the use of MVS in automotive applications, as well as automotive transparent displays and eyewear transparent displays that are expected to be applied to MVS. Session MVS3/INP4 is planning to give talks on the latest haptic technology and gesture input technology as an information input technology that is expected to be applied to MVS. Session MVS4/3DSA9 has prepared lectures on 3D display technology for MVS, such as single rigid body handling of avatars, handling of MIP, head movement of HMD, and aerial imaging display.

Workshop on LC Science and Technologies (LCT)At this year's workshop, we will provide a wide range of presentations on AR/VR and 3D, which have been attracting attention, over four sessions. Furthermore, in addition to high-performance display technologies such as low power consumption, privacy display, flexible technology, high reliability technology, and composite technology with solar cells, we are planning presentations on new applications such as liquid crystal application technology for 5G/6G, biomedical imaging, as well as new materials and evaluation analysis.
Workshop on Active Matrix Displays (AMD)The AMD Workshop focuses on the latest active matrix displays including micro-LEDs, LCDs, OLEDs, and sensors which are operated by oxide TFTs, organic TFTs, Si TFTs. This year, six oral sessions and two poster sessions are scheduled, including invited talks on high-mobility TFTs using polycrystalline oxide semiconductors, AI-assisted development of organic TFTs, and micro-LEDs for AR glasses, etc. Furthermore, new imaging sessions based on sensor technologies will be launched this year.
Workshop on FPD Manufacturing, Materials and Components (FMC)The FMC Workshop covers recent developments and achievements in flat panel display technology, including display-related optics, materials, components, manufacturing, and metrology. There will be 26 oral presentations including PRJ and related joint papers such as LCT. In addition, 18 poster presentation papers are included. At IDW ’23, FMC WS has 15 invited speakers, introducing those who will talk about the latest achievements such as the fabrication method of RGB color filters using structural color using metamaterials and examples of its application, the fabrication of microlens arrays using metamaterials and imaging applications, AR & VR, Monolithic full-color micro-LED technology featuring high-efficiency InGaN red micro-LEDs for displays, two micro-LED mass transfer technologies: tape-assisted laser transfer and photopolymer transfer, and thinner and energy-efficient mini-LEDs. The most recent research presentations will unveil an innovative structure proposal, achieving uniform display through a 2D backlight with fewer LEDs. It addresses competition and the future challenges of LCD and OLED, to boost display assembly rate and size in automobiles.
Workshop on Inorganic Emissive Display and Phosphors (PH)This workshop presents the latest achievements in devices and phosphors for emissive displays, lighting, and imaging. Invited talks will present essential and notable topics about narrow band phosphors and QLEDs. Pb-related issues in QDs will be discussed, and key materials of QLEDs will be presented. Progress of novel nitride and oxynitride phosphors, ultra violet LASER for display application and InGaN LEDs on tailored three-dimensional structures toward micro-LED displays will also be discussed.
Workshop on OLED Displays and Related Technologies (OLED)The OLED workshop covers a wide range of aspects related to the science and technology of organic devices, including OLEDs, QLEDs, and OTFTs. The topics covered range from basic device physics and materials science to device structures and analyses. In addition, IDW ’23 will feature new proposals, such as OTFT sensors, light-emitting devices using up-conversion mechanisms, and OLED displays using photolithographic patterning. The QDs and QLEDs technologies for display applications will also be discussed in a QDT session on Special Topics of Interest (STI), which is planned jointly with the Workshop on Inorganic Emissive Display and Phosphors (PH).
Workshop on 3D/Hyper-Realistic Displays and Systems (3D)The Workshop on 3D/Hyper-Realistic Displays and Systems consists of many papers on 3D systems and devices for holography, light field display, integral photography, autostereoscopic display, aerial display, and emerging applications for AR/VR. This year, the 3D workshop will present many sessions in conjunction with the 3DSA international conference to provide a good opportunity for audiences to understand the trends in these fields. We have nine invited talks related to transparent 3D display, magneto-optical spatial light modulators, computer-generated holograms, holograms for structured light, wavefront aberration, quantitative phase imaging, depth-varying AR HUD, VR without HMD, and metaverse.
Workshop on Applied Vision and Human Factors (VHF)Join us for the VHF Workshop, featuring three oral sessions, a poster session, and a joint oral session with the PRJ Workshop, all focused on human perception and cognition. Enjoy a wide variety of research presentations, including four fascinating invited talks covering topics like visual-illusion-utilized bathing pads for concealing stoma bags, multi-modal entertaining content with tactile vibrating devices, and the effect of weight on comfort with head-mounted displays. Explore four intriguing regular papers on education digitization, calibration-related impacts on MTF measurements, and CNN-based image style transfer, along with two emerging posters on dynamic spatial distortions and assessment of blue-light-considered display. Workshop on Projection and Large-Area Displays and Their Components (PRJ)The PRJ workshop covers eyewear/eyepiece optics, automotive systems, solid-state light sources, electronic holograms, aerial displays, additive manufacturing, projection algorithms, 3D-measurement optics including light detection and ranging (LiDAR), and all the projection related technologies. This year we will hold seven oral sessions on smart industry & sensing technology, art & technology, aerial display & projection mapping, automotive display and devices & components. We will also plan joint sessions with FMC-WS, VHF-WS and MVS-WS to discuss a wider range of topics, and the latest research results on projection-related technologies such as metaverse systems, automotive display and imaging technology & installation will be presented.
Workshop on Electronic Paper and Nonvolatile Displays (EP)The research fields of the EP Workshop are electronic paper and nonvolatile display devices including electrophoretic displays, electrowetting displays, electrochromic displays. These displays have received much attention from the viewpoint of their low-energy consumption. Electrophoretic color displays, energy-saving effect of smart windows, and electrochromic ionic liquids and their application to electrochromic devices are highlighted in our sessions of IDW ’23.
Workshop on MEMS and Emerging Technologies for Future Displays and Devices (MEET)Authorities from top research institutions around the world in this field have been invited. Invited speakers will come from the University of Cambridge, Brunel University London, CEA-LETI, imec, the University of Central Florida, Seoul National University, Kyung Hee University, Sejong University, National Tsing Hua University, the Beijing Institute of Technology, the Southern University of Science and Technology, Zhejiang University, the National Taiwan University, the National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, Applied Materials, Inc, GE Research, Samsung Display Co., BOE Technology Group Co., TCL Corporate Research, NS Nanotech, ALEDIA, QustomDot, KLA Corporation, LuxNour Technologies, VueReal Inc., PlayNitride Display Co., Ltd., InZiv, and Yole Group. Workshop on Display Electronic Systems (DES)This year, DES-WS will organize four oral sessions and one poster session. As for the display driving technologies that have been dealt with in past IDW, we are featuring new technologies related to various displays such as microLED and OLED. We will also have a session for image device advancement technologies with machine learning technologies. In addition, our workshop is also planning a session on the latest high-quality display systems with four invited speakers.
Workshop on Flexible Electronics (FLX)The Workshop on FLX focuses on advanced technologies for flexible electronics including flexible displays, wearable devices, stretchable devices, and IoT-related devices, which are composed of a wide range of fields from material science to practical applications. This year, the FLX sessions will cover various aspects of flexible electronics, including flexible TFT technologies, flexible/stretchable mini-LED displays, flexible sensors, and advanced materials for flexible devices.
Workshop on Touch Panels and Input Technologies (INP)INP-WS have dealt with touch panel technology, from basics to applications, which has become an indispensable user interface for tablets and mobile displays and has been extended to in-vehicle displays. At the same time, as the usefulness of virtual space-time sharing is being demonstrated, we have provided a forum for discussion on interactive technologies using AR/VR and haptics, which are the elemental technologies. This year, related to biomedical, imaging and metaverse, which IDW is also paying attention to, we have set up a special session on medical imaging and bioimaging applying liquid crystal optical technology. In addition, holographic 3D information sensing in natural light using liquid crystal optical elements as a key device suggests new possibilities for liquid crystal applications. Furthermore, we will discuss the possibility of haptics, which is an elemental technology of the Metaverse, regarding manipulation and sensory presentation based on the understanding of physicality. Regarding touch panels, there are reports on the status of force touch and various applications of nanowires. In addition, in relation to AR/VR interactive technology, which INP has been paying attention to for many years, we will discuss the mechanism of VR sickness and its countermeasures, the history and prospects of tactile interfaces, and their applications, including ergonomic approaches.
The Kobayashi-Uchiike-Mikoshiba Prize shall be conferred by the International Display Workshops General Incorporated Association Board of Directors upon a person who has both an outstanding record of accomplishments in any of the IDW fields of interest and made an outstanding contribution to the IDW. The accomplishments that are being honored shall have led to important contributions in the advancement or application of engineering, science and technology, resulting in the realization of significant value to society.
IDW Best Paper Award, Best Student Award and IDW Outstanding Poster Paper AwardIDW will present “IDW Best Paper Award”, “IDW Best Student Award” and “IDW Outstanding Poster Paper Award”. The award committee of IDW will select the most outstanding papers from those presented at IDW ’23. The award winners will be posted on the IDW website. The award winners will receive a plaque after the conference.
I-DEMO (Innovative Demonstration Session)Thirty-one presentations will be demonstrated, providing the opportunity for an interdisciplinary technical discussion. Demonstration Awards will be awarded to the demonstration with the most significant impact on the audience.

IDW ’23 will host a virtual reality event in a metaverse venue on the day before the main conference.
The event will feature expert lectures, panel discussions, exhibitions, and demonstration of next-generation in-automotive displays, to provide a deeper understanding of the metaverse and its potential applications.

Eminent speakers will give in-person talks, and attendees will have the opportunity to communicate directly with them. Drinks and food will also be served. This event is only open to designated tickets holders.
“Capturing and Displaying Image Technologies in the Medical Field”
This event will focus on the latest capturing and displaying image technologies that contribute to the evolution of medical technology such as telemedicine, tele-surgery, digitization of medical technology such as endoscopic surgery, and examination technology. A special session, and an onsite and metaverse exhibition will be held.
