IDW ’21 will feature 313 papers, including 3 keynote addresses, 143 invited presentations, 104 oral presentations, and 63 lightning talk presentations. Following the plenary session of keynote addresses on Wednesday morning, presentations will begin and continue in 6 parallel oral sessions through Friday. Lightning Talk sessions, Extended Live Q&A, and Enhanced Discussion will enable participants to discuss topics in detail. IDW ’21 should be of interest to not only researchers and engineers, but also managers of companies and institutions in the display community.
Special Topics of Interest
Special Topics of Interest on AR/VR and Hyper Reality (AR&VR)Augmented reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) applications and UI/UX employing high performance display devices such as sensors, cameras, and software technologies have shown significant progress in recent years. This year we have organized Special Topics composed of related papers from multiple sessions ranging from display devices to optics for HMD, algorithm, ergonomics and materials for AR/VR applications. The IDW ’21 is a venue to access versatile state-of-the-art research in AR and VR.
Special Topics of Interest on Automotive Displays (AUTO)Special Topics of Interest on Automotive Displays will present wide-ranging presentations on automotive displays. This year AUTO will be presented on Thursday, December 2, in three sessions: two INP sessions and a PRJ session. In the INP sessions, there will be interesting presentations on the development of a fingerprint detection system that can be used as an input to the display, as well as a presentation on how to detect different pressures on the screen. In the PRJ session, a compact system of Adaptive Driving Beam (ADB) will be proposed, and a technique of using projection mapping for interior design evaluation will be presented. AUTO covers a wide range of technologies for automotive displays, and we expect to see a lot of forward-looking research presentations. These presentations will certainly be appealing to those interested in the automotive field.
Special Topics of Interest on Micro/Mini LEDs (mLED)Continuing from IDW ’20, discussions will be held on future technological points to be overcome for large-, small- and micro-size displays with micro-LED (µLED) pixels. In FMC, as the development of µLED array for achieving low-cost and high-throughput, cutting-edge technologies such as RGB-LED integration technology using the sputtering method, mass transfer technology using a UV laser, and high-resolution RGB-OLED micro displays are reported. In MEET, for nitride semiconductor-based visible and far-UVC LEDs, the relation between light-extraction efficiency and internal quantum efficiency is analyzed using a physics-based model to realize high-brightness and low-power consumption µLED displays. The elastomer stamp mass-transfer technology with a high throughput is also presented for assembling µLEDs onto a display panel.
Special Topics of Interest on Quantum Dot Technologies (QDT)This topic will cover all aspects of the science and technologies of quantum dots (QD) and quantum rods (QR), ranging from materials research, device structure and properties, device applications for lighting, display and sensor, and high color gamut displays. This topic will specialize in QD technologies (QDT) in order to provide a venue for the vitalization of debates in each field. At IDW ’21, sessions will be established as STI at each Work Shop of PH, MEET, and OLED. The Topics of each WS are as below

Topical Session on Artificial Intelligence and Smart Society (AIS)Recently, artificial intelligence has become a common technology, and it will be a key concept of the smart society in the future, known in Japan as "Industry 4.0" and "Society 5.0," where there are good connections between cloud and edge. In this scope, the relationship between information displays, artificial intelligence, and smart society will be discussed. This year, four invited speakers are invited, and there will be presentations that propose how to interact with information displays in a smart society where artificial intelligence is essential: Deep Learning-based Image Restoration, Augmented Reality and Reduced Reality, Surgical Applications, and "MaaS". In addition, joint oral sessions with DES, VHF, PRJ, AMD, and INP and poster sessions are also planned. This shows the topical session's wide relationship with various technologies

Workshop on LC Science and Technologies (LCT)The LC Science and Technologies (LCT) workshop covers the latest LC-based technologies, from new and improved display modes and materials to emerging applications such as LC lenses, sensors, and beam steerers. Of particular interest this year is the session on Ferroelectric Nematic LCs, where we will have leading scientists from the US, Europe and Japan present their research on this exciting new LC phase. IDW ’21 will be an excellent opportunity for participants to learn about the latest LC-related developments.
Workshop on Active Matrix Displays (AMD)The AMD workshop covers active-matrix driven LCDs, micro-LEDs, OLEDs, sensors, and other devices. Recent paper presentations tend to focus on oxide TFT, which is very much expected to play a role in applications for high resolution and high contrast LCDs and OLEDs, and micro-LEDs. We have scheduled six technical sessions for high-performance displays using oxide TFTs, flexible displays, micro-LEDs, emerging TFTs, and innovative displays for the next generation. WS also incorporates three sessions jointly held with the FLX and AIS workshops to discuss a wider range of hot topics.
Workshop on FPD Manufacturing, Materials and Components (FMC)The FPD Manufacturing, Materials and Components (FMC) workshop covers recent developments and achievements in the field of flat panel display technologies, including display optics, materials, components, display panel manufacturing and measurements technologies. In the FMC sessions, papers related to optical components (PRJ3/FMC1), micro-LED (FMC2), aerial imaging components and systems for touchless interfaces (FMC3/INP6, INP7/FMC4), new material components (FMC5), advanced process and components for flexible electronics (FLX5/FMC6), and display manufacturing (FMC7/AIS9) will be presented orally (28 papers) and also in lightning talks (7 papers). In IDW ’21, optics for aerial interfaces are highlighted. The development of µLED arrays for achieving low-cost, high-throughput, and cutting-edge technologies, such as RGB-LED integration technology using the sputtering method, mass transfer technology using a UV laser, and high-resolution RGB-OLED micro-display are presented as invited talks and contributed papers.
Workshop on Inorganic Emissive Display and Phosphors (PH)This workshop presents the latest achievements in devices and phosphors for emissive displays, lighting, and imaging. Invited talks will present vital and notable topics about micro LED displays and QLEDs. The issue of the recent findings in device physics will be discussed, and the key technology of micro-LED and novel displays with nitride LED will be presented. Regarding QLED, details of operation mechanisms will be discussed using experimental results and simulation results, and the efficiency-limiting factors will also be discussed using machine learning. The recent investigation on QLED performance using Cd-free QDs such as InP, ZnSeTe and chalcopyrite type AgInS2 will also be presented. The Mini QLED emitter will be also presented.
Workshop on OLED Displays and Related Technologies (OLED)The OLED workshop covers all aspects of the science and technologies of OLED, QLED and other organic devices, ranging from material science, basic device physics for OLED device and display technologies, and other applications. In addition to new OLED-related technologies such as conventional OLED display devices, analysis, and materials, IDW ’21 will have a presentation on new OLED technology that it is being attempted to apply to wearable devices. QLEDs for display applications are also covered extensively, and a QDT session on Special topics of interest (STI) is planned jointly with Workshop on Inorganic Emissive Display and Phosphors (PH).
Workshop on 3D/Hyper-Realistic Displays and Systems (3D)The 3D/hyper-realistic displays and systems workshop consists of many papers on 3D systems and devices for holography, light field display, integral photography, autostereoscopic displays, aerial displays, and emerging applications for AR/VR. We have five invited talks related to holographic see-through and near-eye display, high-definition 3D imaging and display, integral 3D display with eye-tracking technology, multimodal acoustic display, and 3D image reconstruction in the brain.
Workshop on Applied Vision and Human Factors (VHF)The VHF workshop covers all ergonomic factors in human interfaces, such as visual aspects, environmental-related aspects, and measurements. We will hold eight oral sessions and one lightning talk session, including special topic sessions on virtual reality, in addition to image quality and physiological factors. We will also hold two joint sessions on AIS (Topical Session on Artificial Intelligence and Smart Society) related to deep learning and the smart society, and one joint session on the 3D Workshop. Seven invited talks will be given in the oral sessions, concerning spatial enhancement using eye-sensing light field display, assessment of drivers' state of attentiveness, emotion estimation using non-contact sensors, human brain processing and Shitsukan-related color, quality of working, and psychological studies using VR avatars.
Workshop on Projection and Large-Area Displays and Their Components (PRJ)The PRJ workshop covers eyewear/eyepiece optics, automotive systems, solid-state light sources, electronic holograms, aerial displays, projection algorithms, 3D-measurement optics including light detection and ranging (LiDAR), and all the projection related technologies. This year's session will focus on human sensing enabling a "new normal" after the COVID-19 era, outer space (satellite imagery), and the latest display technologies in smart cities, AR/VR and its platforms, dynamic projection mapping and its algorithms, automotive displays, active components, and visibility evaluation. These 36 papers will be orally presented (partly presented in lightning talks) in nine sessions. Invited presentations include the image processing technology used in asteroid exploration, satellite data format processing technology, Flash LiDAR for lunar and planetary landers by JAXA, technology for immersive XR, VCSEL, and the high brightness laser projector that won the Prime Minister's Award.
Workshop on Electronic Paper (EP)The Electronic Paper workshop will cover electrophoretic, electrochromic, and electrowetting technologies. In the sessions, emerging topics in electronic paper including color technology, e-Tile and eNote applications, front-lighting technology for electronic paper, and Solid-State type electronic paper will be discussed. These aggressive challenges will be presented in the following three sessions: 1) Progress of Electrophoretic Display Technologies and Application, 2) Electrochromic Display Technologies, 3) Coloration Technologies for e-Paper.
Workshop on MEMS and Emerging Technologies for Future Displays and Devices (MEET)The MEET workshop is unique in covering all aspects of MEMS, micro LEDs, quantum dot, nanotechnologies and emerging technologies concerning future displays, imaging devices, and emerging electron devices. The MEET workshop has established sessions on micro LEDs and quantum dot/quantum dot light-emitting diodes for the first time in the world in academic society, and seeks to broaden the horizon of display and imaging technologies into cutting-edge technologies. Research areas such as materials, basic physics, and fabrication processes are included. Among all the MEMS, nanotechnologies and display conferences in the world, this is the only opportunity for MEMS, nanotechnologies and cutting-edge technology researchers to gather and discuss such devices. Authorities from top research institutions around the world in this field have been invited. Invited speakers will come from the Univ. of Cambridge, Brunel Univ. of London, CEA-LETI, Columbia Univ., Univ. of Southern Florida, Seoul Nat. Univ., KyungHee Univ., Hongik Univ., Beijing Inst. of Tech., Zhejiang Univ., Fuzhou Univ., Southern Univ. of S&T, Hebei Univ. of Tech., Nat. Chiao Tung Univ., Intel, Samsung Display, NS Nanotech, GE Research, imec, Nanosys, X display, PlayNitride Display, and Yole Développement. Together with contributed papers with high-quality content, this workshop is aimed at participants who wish to open up new fields in displays, imaging devices, biomedical applications and emerging devices such as the Micro/Mini LEDs session for high brightness and wide color-gamut displays, as well as quantum dot technologies sessions on highly efficient cd-free quantum-dot nanocrystal perovskites, and so on. Moreover, participants can look forward to information on sensors, biomedical applications and emerging devices such as carbon nanotube electron beam sources and ultraviolet light sources by using MEMS micro/nano fabrication technology.
Workshop on Display Electronic Systems (DES)This year, DES-WS will organize five oral sessions. In the sessions for display driving technology and 3D image recognition/display technologies, as at previous IDWs, we are featuring new technologies related to various displays from mobile displays to 8K displays, and their evaluation methods. In addition, we will host two sessions on new image processing methods using AI technologies. These sessions will introduce new image recognition/enhancement technologies and new technologies that are integrated with other modal information.
Workshop on Flexible Electronics (FLX)The FLX workshop focuses on advanced technologies for flexible electronics including flexible displays, wearable devices, stretchable devices, and IoT-related devices, which are composed of a wide range of fields from material science to practical applications. The sessions cover all aspects of the most topical flexible devices and material technologies including flexible displays, foldable displays and wearable sensors.
Workshop on Touch Panels and Input Technologies (INP)INP has dealt with touch panel technology, which has become an indispensable user interface for tablets and mobile displays and has been extended to in-vehicle displays, from basics to applications, including fingerprint sensors. At the same time, while the usefulness of virtual space-time sharing is being demonstrated in the COVID-19 pandemic, we have also provided a forum for discussions on interactive technologies using their elemental technologies such as AR / VR and Haptic. This year, in touch panel-related technologies, we will focus on display-embedded fingerprint sensors, ultrasonic technology, and ultra-sensitive force sensors. In addition, aerial interface technologies such as hover touch, which are expected to be more and more effective in coming years, will also be of interest. Regarding next-generation interactive technology, tactile display using shape memory alloy and MEMS and contact lens type hologram display are attracting attention. Furthermore, focusing on the Shitsukan (texture) research, which is becoming part of the English language, projection mapping consistent with light fields, precise display of tactile sensation, and its relevance to visual processing are also important themes. As special projects for the future of image sensing technology, capacitive image sensors, computational imaging, and TOF imaging will be topics that cannot be overlooked.
The Kobayashi-Uchiike-Mikoshiba Prize shall be conferred by the International Display Workshops General Incorporated Association Board of Directors upon a person who has both an outstanding record of accomplishments in any of the IDW fields of interest and made an outstanding contribution to the IDW. The accomplishments that are being honored shall have led to important contributions in the advancement or application of engineering, science and technology, resulting in the realization of significant value to society.
IDW Best Paper Award and IDW Outstanding Lightning Talk Paper AwardIDW will present “IDW Best Paper Award” and “IDW Outstanding Lightning Talk Paper Award”. The award committee of IDW will select the most outstanding papers from those presented at IDW ’21. The award winners will be announced on the IDW website and given a plaque after the conference.
Special EventsIDW ’21 will hold two special events: “Future Trends in Image Information and Media Technology” and “the Web of Things (WoT)”. These themes will inform you about new information display technology from sensing to distribution. Please join this event for the creation novel display technology. The events consists of lecture videos in an on-demand format and you will have a chance to discuss topics at an enhanced discussion session on December 2.
